“Through Cultural Eyes” Show Opening

A Look Back at The Twentieth Anniversary Retrospective of The HARDCOAL CHRONICLES
November 9, 1995 ~ The Anthracite Heritage Museum, Scranton, Pennsylvania ~ January 8, 1997

The HARDCOAL CHRONICLES was very honored to be the show selected for display through the milestone year of the Anthracite Heritage Museum Complex. It was a joint celebration of twentieth anniversaries when teamed together with the Anthracite Heritage Museum and Iron Furnaces Associates, along with the Commonwealth’s Museum Complex professionals to present “Through Cultural Eyes”.

With 210 images displayed in four custom-designed galleries, it was the largest photographic exhibit ever presented in Anthracite history. However, as photographer Scott Herring said during the formal opening on May 4th, 1996, “There’s nothing on the walls in there that’s equal to the people gathered in here”.

With representatives from 22 Anthracite mining companies, two railroads, and guests who travelled in from six states, all of Anthracite’s essential extended family was present in one place at one time, perhaps for the first time ever. The people of Tremont, Pennsylvania (who have long claimed Scott as their own) sent up an entire bus load, and after somewhat over four hundred had signed the guest registry, we ran out of pages. So, nobody really knows how many were in attendance, but the People of the Black Diamond were there, with their photographer, for their moment.
